Description

This introductory class offers an overview of CIT and basic communication, de-escalation and mental health awareness training.

This class is open only to current law enforcement and corrections officers.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) helps participants identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance-use disorders in others. The MHFA curriculum has been adapted specifically for law enforcement to address the unique situations that officers encounter and provides response options to de-escalate incidents and refer individuals to appropriate help. Officers are provided tools to:

  • Identify and understand commonly encountered mental health and substance abuse observable behaviors
  • Learn to respond appropriately without compromising officer safety
  • Learn and practice communication strategies to effectively de-escalate crisis situation
  • Personalized coaching of communication and de-escalation skills through realistic role play scenarios utilizing professional role players
